Mark Ivan Payne

Mark Ivan Payne, 54, passed away suddenly July 17, 2010, in Sanpete County at his cabin. He fought a life long battle with a heart problems. Mark was born in Provo Utah, July 9, 1956, to I. Reed Payne and Ruth Goodson Payne.
He married his high school sweetheart Connie Ashworth. They just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in June. They were blessed with three wonderful children.

Mark graduated from BYU with a Bachelors degree and from the University of Utah with a Masters both in Social Work. He spent 30 years working at the Utah State Hospital making the lives of Utah’s mentally ill better. He started his career as a tech working graveyards and retired after serving as superintendant for 12 years. He has spent the last 5 years as the director of Substance Abuse and Mental Health for the State of Utah.

He has made a difference in countless lives both in his work and church service. Mark served as a Bishop, counselor in the Stake Presidency and was currently serving as a Branch President at the MTC.

He loved to golf, spend time with friends and family at his cabin, “Payne Reliever”, but most of all he loved to spend time with his wife and grandkids. He was well known for his sense of humor and practical jokes. Many loved and looked up to Mark.

He is survived by his wife Connie, children Angela Small, Stacy (Doug) Daniels, and Andrew Ivan Payne, four grandchildren, Haylie, Garrett, Kennedy and London, and siblings, Lynn (Mary Ann), Adele (Randy) Hickman, Dean (LeeAnn), Steve (Karen), and Jim (Liesl). He also leaves behind his wonderful mother. His father preceded him in death in December.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the General LDS Missionary fund.

Funeral services will be held at 11:06 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Windsor Stake Center 1600 North 60 East, Orem, UT. Family and friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem and Thursday morning from 9:15-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Interment will be held at the Orem City Cemetery.
